hiatus and wikipedia fun.
So it's apparently been 8 months since I've posted, and probably 3 or 4 since I actually checked LJ. I think I got a little tired of scrolling through so many entries on my friends page, and then got out of the habit of checking back. Now I'm back!

For my first entry, I'm going to discuss the most recent comic from Jeffrey Rowland over at OverCompensating. Here's the latest comic (click the image to be directed to the OverCompensating site):

It sounded like a fun idea, so I went ahead and checked my own most recent wikipedia searches. Here are the results:

UNIX System V
SVD
CZ 75
Solaris (operating system)
HP-UX

I don't know if I'd say you can tell everything about me by these, but it does show that I'm a UNIX geek and have an interest in Eastern Bloc small arms. My browser knows me. :)

If you want, check your history and see what comes up for you! I'd love to see what other people come up with, so post your results below, if you so desire.

Cervello Elettronico - Negate The Instigator
So one of my favorite bands (err, just one guy, so I guess "musical acts") just released its first label-released album with Crunch Pod Records. I've loved his stuff ever since I heard it on AmpedOut a couple of years ago or so. I post because his new album is so friggin' awesome that I gotta share it. In fact, just about everyone I've introduced it to has fallen in love with it.

If you like electronic music, I encourage you to go check his stuff out. His music is an interesting mix of Electronica, EBM, and Industrial Noise. The best way I know how to describe is music to someone who's never heard it is that it's what it would sound like if The Crystal Method did Industrial Noise. It's very clean and well put together. His myspace page has a player embedded with several songs from the new album, Negate The Instigator. The player is about halfway down the page, past several show promo images. Skip around the tracks a bit and check out what he's got up there.

The album is for sale on the Crunch Pod site and also on Amazon. Go buy his album and support an artist making some badass music - it's well worth the $14

Intarweb on teh cell phone
Wee! So i got a new cell phone a few weeks ago, and today I broke down and finally got "mobile web" service for it. While it is useful for some things, overall it is incredibly crippled. I was told by Cricket that I could only access the few lame services on their stupid portal. This turned out to be untrue, as they do allow connections through google's mobile proxy, which I am posting from now. I suppose it's a fair deal for $5/mo. Anyway, I think I'll post this before my fingers get too tired.

You Are Austin

A little bit country, a little bit rock and roll.
You're totally weird and very proud of it.
Artistic and freaky, you still seem to fit in... in your own strange way.

a meme that's actually interesting.

LJ Interests meme results

  1. barenaked ladies:
A Canadian band known for their witty music, these guys have lots of fun playing. They've been together for a VERY long time, though most Americans only know of their most recent work. I find that most canadians I know dislike them, largely due to the incessant radio play of their music fueled by Canadian Content laws (see "Broadcast Standards").
  2. computing:
I'm definitely what you would consider a computer geek, although I do have a love for the outdoors that is not as common among us. My affinity for computing involves my ability to conceptualize and understand linear thought and break down complex systems into simpler parts. Computers are amazing tools when one is free to experiment.
  3. free speech:
One of the most basic needs of humankind, the ability to express oneself freely without persecution. This very basic right has come under attack in American society, and I feel it vitally important that free speech is kept intact.
  4. industrial:
Specifically, industrial music, faily wide range of musical styles, generally characterized by darker tones and driving beats. Industrial music is usually at least partly electronically generated, if not completely. Some of my favorite bands in this genre include Cervello Elettronico (Industrial Noise/EBM), Terrorfakt (Industrial Noise), Covenant (Industrial/EBM), Manufactura (Industrial Noise), Assemblage 23, and so many others.
  5. lpfm:
Low Power FM Radio, one of the few remaining avenues for community radio available. With the saturation of the FM band by wealthy commercial radio companies and the impassible financial entry barrier for broadcasting on the FM band, even in rural areas, individuals or organizations wishing to provide local programming are very often forced to transmit without a license, also known as pirate radio. A LPFM license has finally been made available by the FCC, after much lobbying by radio enthusiasts. Unfortunately, entry into this license market seems to disproportionately favor organizations such as churches, rather than general music or talk programming, so many broadcasters continue to operate as pirate stations.
  6. okra:
Okra is my favorite vegetable. My favorite method of preparation is breaded and fried, but pickling is a close second.
  7. radio:
I have an interest in radio (as you might have guessed). I am interested and intrigued by the many uses of the entire radio spectrum, and have an interest in becoming an amateur radio operator. Radio has incredible uses for communication, and I beleive that the airwaves belong to the citizens.
  8. strong bad:
Strong Bad is a character from a group of popular flash comics found on the website homestarrunner.com, and is the epitome of several stereotypes of people, all rolled into one. You really have to watch the cartoons to really understand this one.
  9. the grand tetons:
A name commonly used to refer to the The Teton Range or Grand Teton National Park. I drove through and camped in this park in 2000, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I'd recommend a visit if you've never been. It's a beautiful area.
  10. zilker park:
Zilker Park is a large park in Austin (my home town and current residence), consisting of about 350 acres, and comprises a large part of the area immediately across Town Lake from downtown Austin. Zilker Park houses Barton Springs, the Zilker Hillside Theatre (an outdoor theatre), the Zilker botanical gardens, and a large number of scenic and recreational areas. Zilker Park is host to an incredible number of events, probably the best known being The Austin City Limits Music Festival.

humor test
the Cutting Edge
(56% dark, 43% spontaneous, 27% vulgar)
your humor style:
CLEAN | SPONTANEOUS | DARK

Your humor's mostly innocent and off-the-cuff, but somehow there's
something slightly menacing about you. Part of your humor is making
people a little uncomfortable, even if the things you say aren't in and
of themselves confrontational. You probably have a very dry delivery,
or are seriously over-the-top. Your type is the most likely to
appreciate a good insult and/or broken bone and/or very very fat person
dancing.

i'm a robot!
Robot
You are 57% Rational, 28% Extroverted, 0% Brutal, and 14% Arrogant.
You are the Robot! You are characterized by your rationality. In fact, this is really ALL you are characterized by. Like a cold, heartless machine, you are so logical and unemotional that you scarcely seem human. For instance, you are very humble and don't bother thinking of your own interests, you are very gentle and lack emotion, and you are also very introverted and introspective. You may have noticed that these traits are just as applicable to your laptop as they are to a human being. In short, your personality defect is that you don't really HAVE a personality. You are one of those annoying, super-logical people that never gets upset or flustered. Unless, of course, you short circuit.

To put it less negatively:

1. You are more RATIONAL than intuitive.

2. You are more INTROVERTED than extroverted.

3. You are more GENTLE than brutal.

4. You are more HUMBLE than arrogant.

Compatibility:

Your exact opposite is the Class Clown.

Other personalities you would probably get along with are the Hand-Raiser, the Emo Kid, and the Haughty Intellectual.
