indy comic book week, ACT-I-VATE, new mug from Boom, new collection, new New Yorker
Today. Yep. Today. I'll be going to Things From Another World in the Hollywood District in Portland to hang out and sell my comics as part of the Indy Comics Week. 2-7pm.
I'll have original art and my dirty comics in addition to my usual crap.

http://www.tfaw.com/
http://www.tfaw.com/blog/

Also: this week I'm posting a new comic on the www.act-i-vate.com website. Bookmark it and check it. There might be some overlap with my blog - but mostly it will be original material.
http://act-i-vate.com/creators?id=50

Boom Studios is producing a brand new Too Much Coffee Man mug. Should be pretty cool. The plans are to make it change images as you add hot water. I'll have more details on this soon. But it looks like the pre-order is available now.

That's about it... working on a collection of the New Yorker rejects. Here is an anemic rough version of the cover:

And on a non-rejected note. This next issue of the New Yorker sports one of my cartoons:

good transmission work
Our 2003 Dodge Neon broke down on the hubbie's way to work this morning. The first place he took it to said we'd have to replace the entire transmission just because of a bad computer chip, which I think is bullsh!t, especially since I don't exactly have the $2500-3700 quoted by that shop. My father-in-law is calling around for other options but I thought I'd check here as well. Anyone have good transmission work done here in town? Preferably after being told to replace the whole thing but really didn't have to? There's nothing wrong with the transmission other than this stupid chip, and I JUST paid this car off (seriously: got the title in the mail *yesterday*).

Update on Passport
Thank you for your prayers
I had a great day today
The bus came with in five minutes of my getting to the bus stop.Sometimes we have to wait up to forty minutes. There was a seat available, which is rare on these crowded buses. It only lasted for two stops,as an elderly man got on.I looked at the young people and nobody ofeered him their seats. This despite the fact you are supposed to respect your elders in this country. So I offered my seat.
I had a strong feeling to take extra passport photos with me to the Canadian Consulate for a new passport.Good thing I did.The ones offered had the wrong background.Thankfully there was a pair with the right background colour
I took a search a word book with me and a good thing too.i waited for three hours.Without the book I would have gone bonkers
After six previous atempts my application was FINALLY acepted.Any little error and they won't acept it then you have to come back again.I pray it will be processed quickly and I get a new passport
Please pray it is prossed quickly and I get a new passport
Thank you

Use of the Creed in liturgy
I'm trying to get a sense of what Protestant denominations use a creed in their liturgy - I know that it's in the Book of Common Prayer, but do others use one? I'm also interested in whether single-congregation or other small groups of Christians use one, in addition to the large mainstream denominations.

If your denomination does use a creed, which one does it use?

Who's got two thumbs and no bicycle?

←← This guy!

Stolen from the bike rack at the top of the BART stairs at 4th and Market, around 7pm. This bike lasted over three years, though, which is an all-time record since way back in the nineteen-hundreds. (Previously.) They didn't leave a broken lock behind, which is somewhat puzzling. It was a u-lock with one of the new-style flat keys with the dimples on them, whatever those are called.

Racquetball?
So I feel like this might be a dumb question, but I haven't lived in Austin for very long...
I broke my racquetball racquet yesterday and I need to buy a new one. Where can I get a new, quality racquet? (not the $20 ones you get at Academy)
I would just order off the internet but I would like to try out the racquet before I buy it...

teachers?
hello everyone.

i'm a native texan who has lived in NYC for the past 4.5 years. due to some family stuff lately, plus a giant love for the awesomeness that is HEB (ha, i'm serious!), i'm starting to seriously look into a move to the austin area. i'm finishing up work on my masters in childhood ed, and will have it and my new york state teacher certification in may. i did my undergrad work at a texas university.

SO! i'm wondering if there are any austin-area teachers in here who can shed some light on how it looks job-wise right now. i know it's tough pretty much everywhere (they're not even accepting applications in nyc, sheesh), so i'm realistic. i've only just started exploring this, so any advice you've got, websites to check out, etc would be welcome. plus, if anyone has come into teaching in texas with certification from a different state, i'd love to hear your experience as well. i'm open to austin and any of it's suburbs for an elementary school position.

i'm really looking forward to finally coming back home. =) oh, and sonic. i've really missed sonic, too.

Thou Shall Smell the Flowers

I have been devouring science documentaries.
To me, studies of the natural world are better tools for studying “god” than sacred texts.

A Sacred text is a man’s attempt to put the inexpressible into words. Often those words are then translated. Sometimes the original words are even passed down several times before they make it into print.

Language is an amazing tool. But it is merely a tool. Remember in high school when your writing professor would repeat the mantra “Show don’t tell?”

Don’t tell me the flower was pretty, show me it’s beauty. Describe the colors and patterns and the play of the light.

But even the greatest poet could not accurately convey the baffling beauty of a orchid. Joyce Kilmer wrote long ago, “I think that I shall never see a poem lovely as a tree…”

And this is the trouble with sacred words. They are all, essentially, poems about trees.

I don’t mean to argue their truth or value – only to point out the obvious limitations of words.

After reading a particularly vivid account of an experience – say surviving the Katrina floods – you might feel as though you had been there. But it would be incredibly naive to believe that you had the same experience as someone who was neck deep in water and fear.

Could you ever read enough about giving birth to reach an understanding of what that experience is like? Or having sex?

To me, studying science on a very surface level is not about understanding. I have no goal of learning the details of fusion or the intricacies of photosynthesis. Instead, the basic knowledge serves to pulverize into mush any lingering need my brain has of making sense of it all.

Understanding how it all works = impossible and stressful.
Surrendering to the infinitely complex order = calming and peaceful.

This is particularly helpful if you combine micro and macro learning. From microscope to telescope. From distant galaxy to inside my body. No mater how far my attention goes in any direction it never stops uncovering incomprehensible levels of order, chaos, drama, and interconnectedness.

The human drama with it’s adultery, career paths, and invention is no more complicated or important than than the drama of a marshland biosphere or a distant pulsar.

The universe is fractal-y amazing.

The more I watch COSMOS or the Discovery Channel, the more giddy I become with awe.

It seems to me that this awe and appreciation is immensely more important than understanding.

I can enjoy a roller coaster without understanding the physics. I just have faith that the track is constructed in such a way that it supports the speed, gravity, and torque of the ride.

I could read a book about how the ride should be ridden. I could follow the exact steps a legendary rider of the past took: Commandment 4: Thou shall not eat multiple corn dogs before riding. Commandment 5: Thou shall be taller than this sign. Commandment 6: On the sabbath, lines are longer so try to go mid-week. Etc..

The rules & descriptions can certainly be helpful. But they must be understood in their place. Too many people are reading the rules AS they are riding – so focused on the abstract that they are not enjoying the actual experience.

It may sound trite to suggest to someone that they stop to smell the flowers. But on the contrary, this is profound spiritual guidance.

For me, the natural world holds direct glimpses into the divine. Like a more literal biblical god, it is not something I can look directly at – it is simply too much for me to comprehend. But in every veined leaf I see the reflection of this divine order.

The ego wills of humans – my own included – disintegrate into comical naiveté.

In a universe so overwhelmingly miraculous – I have been given the ability to perceive it. My purpose is no more (or less) grandiose than any other piece of the cosmic puzzle. Whether massive star or tiny atom.

But what IS significant – more so than anything else that defines my existence – Is that I am able to perceive and ponder this miracle as it unfolds.

It is a unique human gift. And our appreciation of this gift defines our life and our relationships with all other life.

Of course, it is pretty ridiculous to try to explain all of this with words.

“I think that I shall never see…”

Helmets
So due to some non-accident related damage, I need to go buy a new motorcycle helmet. Sadly, the shop I bought my original gear from has closed, as has the shop near my home. Anyone have a recommendation on where to find a reasonable variety of helmets at non-exorbitant prices?

hair pie
Here is what I need:

A hair stylist (cut and color, please) who can do actual edgy, hipster haircuts and will not look at me funny and try to talk me out of asymmetry, or platinum blonde or whatever other wanky bullshit I decide I want. It would also be awesome if they were thoughtful and arty and might be able to make good suggestions about a new cut. I will bring in pictures of what I think I want, but I've had the same asymmetrical bob-thing for a while, and I am pretty tired of it and my hair is getting to be too long for it.

I have very wavy, very thick hair that takes a long time to cut and highlight (stylists never believe me when I tell them they will probably need three hours) so I need someone hip, competent and very patient.

Cost is not really an issue, since I would love to not have to go to someone else to pay to fix a cheap haircut. I don't care where they're located, so long as it's south of Waco and north of Brownsville. I would like a name, not a general salon recommendation. That has failed me several times, as I typically walk out of the place looking like a newscaster, not a rock star. I hate that. My life is fairly boring, and having cool hair is pretty exciting.

Mexican restaurant recommendation!
If you haven't been to Azul Tequila, I would highly suggest you give them a try. I just got back from having dinner there, and I fell in love with the place. The menu is half authentic interior mexican, half tex mex (which is always a great combination of choices in my book). I had the sopa de tortilla, and it tasted like I was eating homemade soup.
The servers were all very attentive as well, which is a plus. My roommate and I loved the atmosphere and the food, and we just wanted to share this place with other Austinites!

They're located by the Target off 290 and Lamar.

SWEATY DANCING
Hi Austin,

So, I'm looking for some good, sweaty dance nights.

I grew up here, moved away for college (booo), and I'm back in town with a bunch of friends from school/I've realized that because I haven't lived here since turning 21, my knowledge of the nightlife is nonexistant. I think the last time I went dancing in Austin was when I saw the Faint + TV on the Radio at the Austin Music Hall roughly five years ago. Ha.

I've been poking around on the nets and it looks like TCs Lounge is up our alley...we definitely like us some good funk/soul music. and food. But I'd like some other suggestions. We're here until next Monday. My friends are all New England natives who've never been further south than DC, and I want to show them how it's done down here (and I want to be further convinced to move back here as soon as my lease is up in Boston).

Thank you!
